About me

Hello! I'm Maria Teresa, currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Parasitology) at the Nova University of Lisbon, specifically at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Portugal.

On this webpage, I'll be sharing some details about the projects I am involved in, as well as some of the results and publications. By this moment, my primary focus is on cercarial investigations, particularly my work at the Alqueva Dam lake in the Alentejo region.

I hope you find this content interesting and informative.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me.

Our study

Our main objective is to investigate cercarial dermatitis in Portugal, a waterborne disease caused by cercariae (infective larvae) released by infected freshwater snails. These cercariae accidentally penetrate human skin during water contact, triggering an allergic reaction, as humans are incidental hosts and not the parasites' natural definitive hosts.
